The Health Professions Registration Act 2005 introduced a change to nurses and midwives in Victoria in relation to continuing professional development.

The act specifically notes:

s18(3) The responsible Board may require an applicant

(b) to provide information about -

(ii) any continuing professional development undertaken during the existing registration period.

This legislation enables the Nurses Board of Victoria (NBV) to audit nurses and midwives CPD.

This audit contributes to the public being assured, as far as is practicable, that nurses and midwives who are currently registered with the NBV are undertaking CPD which is contributing to their competence to practice.

With the introduction of this legislation, the NBV developed Guidelines for Nurses and Midwives for Continuing Professional Development with consultation. These guidelines outline the principles for CPD, and identify how an audit of nurses and midwives CPD will be conducted in 2009. A transition period from the introduction of the guidelines to the audit beginning in July 2009 enabled nurses and midwives time to develop their professional portfolios.

Nurses and midwives will be required to provide their professional portfolio for the last 12 months.

CPD Proforma Examples

Developing a portfolio can be done in many different ways. The Board does not request a standard format, however the portfolio needs to include a planning section, identified learning needs and evaluation sections.

Nurses and Midwives can develop their own portfolio format, participate in a College / Association program or can use any of the CPD proformas presented below.

Nurses and Midwives are able to download any of these proformas and change it to suit their portfolio needs.
