NurseWorks is the education and training service of SwingShift Nurses Agency. NurseWorks provides quality professional development for nurses and other health care professionals so they are able to build upon existing abilities and develop new skills and knowledge.

Education and training offered by NurseWorks is specifically focused on practical application of new knowledge so that all participants can expect to experience a higher level of competence and satisfaction in their clinical work.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Nurses Board of Victoria requires all nurses to complete a minimum 30 hrs of Continuing Professional Development.  SwingShift Nurses has determined the following components must be completed on an annual basis:

  • Basic Life Support
  • Infection Control
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Emergency Evacuation Procedures
  • Manual Handling - may be reviewed for Div 3 Nurses
  • Aggression Minimisation training - essential for Div 3 Nurses and those working in Mental Health

SwingShift Nurses will provide opportunities for agency staff to undergo this training.

 Nationally accredited courses  nrt

NurseWorks is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) offering nationally accredited courses for both agency members and the general public. Statement's of Attainment are issued on completion of the course identifying the Nationally Recognised competencies from the Community and Health Services training package. Students may apply Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) by contacting the NurseWorks Manager.

NurseWorks trainers have:

  • demonstrated competencies at least to the level of those being delivered;
  • demonstrated achievement of Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA40104) or the equivalent; and
  • industrial experience that is current and relevant to the particular course or modules that they are involved in delivering.

Certificate IV Division 2 Nurse Post Registration Course - Mental Health Module

Course Overview: The aim of the course is to develop knowledge and skills for Division 2 nurses in the area of mental health so they are able to work more confidently and effectively with people with mental illness who are receiving treatment in the hospital or community setting.

Course Competencies:

HLTEN502A - Apply Effective Communication Skills in Nursing Practice

HLTEN510A - Implement and Monitor Nursing Care for Consumers with Mental Health Conditions

HLTEN410A - Deliver Nursing Care to Consumers with Mental Health Issues

HLTEN402A - Communicate Effectively in a Nursing Role

Course Duration: 6 Months

Course Content: 10 x 4 hr theory sessions (one 4 hr session every 2-3 weeks), covering topics such as Signs and Symptoms of major mental illness, understanding of the mental status examination, development of communication skills, interview techniques, and  the legal rights of people requiring mental health care. Clinical time is performed in their usual workplace (minimum of 1 shift per week).

Assessment will be conducted in the workplace and via written work throughout the course.

Cost: $1200

Selection criteria:

Division 2 nurses registered with the Nurses Board of Victoria

2 proffesional referees and an appropriate level of clinical experience in a health care setting

Advanced PCA course

Course overview:  The course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills of  PCA's to allow them to work more confidently and effectively with people who are receiving treatment in the hospital, community and health care setting. The course is suitable for PCA's who wish to increase their mental health knowledge, increase their knowledge and skills when working in the home environment, and increase their in knowledge and skills to be able assist in self medication.

Course competencies:

CHCCS9A - Provide Support to Clients

CHCCS304A - Assist with Self Medication

Course duration: 4 months

Course content: The theory component is conducted by completing 40 hrs of theory (broken down into 10 x 4hr sessions. Students may miss 2 sessions only (one medication and one mental health session) before additional course work or equivalent is required to graduate.

Clinical time is performed in their usual workplace (minimum of 1 shift per week)

Assessments for the course include worksheets after theory sessions, a workplace assessment (conducted in their usual workplace) and completion of a reflective journal during the course. A theory test for medications is required.

Cost: $500

Selection criteria

PCA (Cert III Aged Care Work or similar)

1 professional referee and appropriate level of clinical experience in a health care setting.
